PHOENIX – The weekend is starting with a sizzle in metro Phoenix – an excessive heat warning is in effect starting Friday morning.

The warning runs through Sunday, with temperatures expected to surpass 110 degrees each day.

There was a 20% chance of thunderstorms late Saturday. The low is expected to be around 91 degrees.

There won’t be much relief Sunday, either. The mercury could hit 112 degrees again and then 110 degrees on Monday (30% chance of storms that night), but the heat should start to back off a bit Tuesday with a drop to 107 degrees.

“We’re definitely going to turn up the heat this weekend,” weather service meteorologist Andrew Deemer told KTAR News 92.3 FM.

“But if you step outside, you’re also going to notice the moisture in the air, it’s a bit more humid. It’s just going to feel awful for everyone.”

The Arizona Department of Health Services said almost 3,000 people a year wind up in emergency rooms around the state suffering from heat-related illnesses.

Homeless, infants, young children and adults 65 or older are among those wo are most susceptible to heat-related illnesses.

To protect yourself against heat sickness, the health department recommends drinking water, dressing properly for hot weather, wearing sunscreen and avoiding strenuous activity, among other things.

The Valley is coming off the hottest June in its history. The average temperature for the month was 95.3 degrees. That actually sounds nice now, doesn’t it?

We want to hear from you.
