Electric-vehicle company finishes 1st construction phase of Arizona facility

Dec 4, 2020, 4:05 AM | Updated: 12:03 pm

PHOENIX — A California-based electric-vehicle company has completed the first phase of construction on its facility south of Phoenix, the company announced Tuesday.

Lucid Motors’ $700 million facility in Casa Grande spans almost 600 acres and will produce the company’s first car, the Lucid Air sedan.

The completion of the construction will allow for production of the Lucid Air sedan to begin next spring.

“The effort and agility demonstrated by this team is truly astounding as we’re already commissioning equipment compatible with the Lucid manufacturing system to start production of the next-generation EV, Lucid Air, in just a few months,” CEO Peter Rawlinson said in a press release.

The facility, dubbed AMP-1, is expected to produce about 30,000 vehicles per year at the start. That annual total could jump as high as 400,000 in coming years as construction continues.

The next phase of construction is expected to begin in 2021 in preparation for production of the company’s first SUV, called Project Gravity.

A total of four construction phases will happen by 2028, expanding the facility to over 5.1 million square feet.

Lucid Motors will create about 5,000 jobs by the completion of the construction.

Initial construction began in Casa Grande in December 2019.

The company considered 60 sites in 13 states before choosing the Pinal County location.

Those interested in buying the Lucid Air can reserve the car for a $300 refundable deposit. The vehicle’s starting price is about $70,000.
