PHOENIX — The city of El Mirage, along with local veterans and neighborhood representatives, dedicated a new monument Friday to honor the country’s veterans.

The monument, located at Veterans Park, features a plaque donated by the Cactus Park Homeowners Association and a flagpole donated by the city.

“Those who have served and sacrificed for our country hold a special place in our hearts,” El Mirage Mayor Alexis Hermosillo said. “We are here to celebrate our veterans, and this monument is a symbol of gratitude for their selflessness, bravery and dedication.

“It is also a shining example of working collaboratively with our residents on a project that’s important to our city and meaningful to the neighborhood.”

The El Mirage Fire Department’s honor guard raised the first flag on to the flagpole during the ceremony, while veteran Daniel Reilly led the Pledge of Allegiance.

A keynote address was given by Martin Crosby, a veteran and chairman of the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission.

“We all served our country honorably, and without the different branches where would our country be?” Crosby said. “This park and monument commemorate our veterans and the men and women now serving, whether they are via ground, air or sea.”
