PHOENIX — Democratic Arizona Attorney General nominee Kris Mayes wants to take politics out of the position if she’s elected as the top legal official in the state.

“I am going to get this office back to what it was meant to be,” Mayes said. “It’s been deeply politicized. It shouldn’t be political.”

For Mayes, that means going after issues such as consumer fraud, elder abuse and fentanyl abuse.

Arizona’s current attorney general, Mark Brnovich, is fresh off an August loss in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate in Arizona.

Mayes’ opponent, Abraham Hamadeh, has tied his campaign to the backing of former President Donald Trump.

“We are going to absolutely uphold individual liberties and individual rights in this state and protect our constitution,” Mayes said.

“We’re not going to play politics with this office. And I think the people of Arizona deserve that kind of an AG.”

Mayes’ ideas on politics have changed since the start of her professional career.

She used to be a registered Republican like Brnovich and Hamadeh.

Mayes said she switched to the Democratic Party in her adulthood because she “realized the Republican Party left me.”

“I think it’s just easier to be an independent-minded centrist,” Mayes said. “And I think that’s where a lot of Arizonans are.”
