PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks kicked off the holiday season on Monday by giving back to hundreds of children from elementary schools around the Valley as part of the 25th D-backs Winter Classic.

Diamondbacks legend Luis Gonzalez told KTAR News 92.3 FM the kids got plenty of goodies for coming out to Chase Field.

“Over 500 kids are coming out here today and they’ll receive shoes and socks and they’re able to get gift bags, and it’s just a fun day for all of us,” Gonzalez said. The kids also received a backpack, books, a D-backs cap and sweatshirt.

He said it’s especially important heading into the holidays to have an event like this.

“These kids are our future, and for us, the organization has always prided itself in giving back in the community, especially at this time of the season and the holiday season for us to go out there and try to bring cheer to a lot of these kids,” Gonzalez said.

Not only were legends out at the ballpark, but current franchise players as well.

Diamondback outfielder and first baseman Pavin Smith explained why he felt compelled to take part in the event.

“I’m out here to give back to the community and give back to some underprivileged kids and, you know, get them a little early Christmas present and be able to just give back and try to make a few kids’ days,” Smith said.

The children also had the opportunity to meet D-backs mascot Baxter, take part in different baseball training activities and dance with the “Be Kind Crew”.
