Construction for upgrades set to begin at Sunset Point Rest Area

PHOENIX — Construction to receive millions of dollars in upgrades is set to begin at Sunset Point Rest Area on Interstate 17 north of Phoenix on Monday, officials said.

The rest point area located 40 miles north of Phoenix along I-17 will undergo renovations expected to be completed in spring 2023, the Arizona Department of Transportation said in a press release.

After ADOT announced Wednesday that the public won’t be allowed to use facilities for several months starting Monday, the agency issued an update Sunday saying the closure won’t start until after Labor Day.

The $7.5 million plan includes upgrades to water and septic systems and the restrooms and vending areas.

The sidewalks, lighting and signage will all be revamped, while the area will also be made more accessible for persons with disabilities.

Crews will work to renovate a sundial memorial that honors ADOT highway workers who’ve died while working, the release said.

Arizona highway officials said commercial truck drivers will be allowed to continue using the area after the post-Labor Day closure, but facilities will be limited. Portable restrooms and hand-washing stations will be available.

All other drivers will be advised to use facilities in other areas such as Black Canyon City about 10 miles south of Sunset Point Rest Area or Cordes Junction, which is about 10 miles north.
