Cinco de Mayo weekend DUI arrests in Arizona up over previous years

PHOENIX — After a tame 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the number of Arizona drivers arrested for DUI went up again over the Cinco de Mayo weekend.
A total of 444 people were arrested on suspicion of DUI in the state between Saturday and Wednesday, according to statistics from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.
Only 148 DUI arrests were made in 2020 and 415 people were arrested for DUI in 2019.
It was the most DUI arrests over Cinco de Mayo since 504 people were detained in 2017.

Those figures include all misdemeanor and aggravated DUI arrests.
The arrests for extreme DUI, when the driver’s blood alcohol content was above .15, was steady at 120 in both 2021 and 2019.
The average blood alcohol content for those arrested was .161, slightly below the .163 mark in 2020 but above .153 in 2021. The legal limit in Arizona is .08.
DUI drug arrests were up from 124 in 2019 to 146 in 2021.
There were 2,733 officers and deputies who made 10,129 traffic stops Saturday through Wednesday.
