PHOENIX — Arizona’s largest emergency shelter program is reopening one of its Phoenix shelters ahead of Christmas.
Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS) announced the reopening of its Vista Colina Shelter near 11th Avenue and Mountain View Road on Monday.
The shelter, which consists of 12 one-bedroom and 18 two-bedroom housing units, had previously been closed due to renovations.
However, it’s now open and ready to house up to 30 families and over 130 people, including children.
How will Vista Colina Shelter help unhoused families in metro Phoenix?
Two families have already settled into the newly remodeled townhomes, which offer residents wraparound services meant to help them leave homelessness, according to CASS CEO Nathan Smith.
“Along with upgraded facilities, we’re excited to introduce new programming focused on children’s well-being and development,” Smith said in a news release.
Life in these fully furnished living spaces will help residents work directly with case managers. These experts will help them access employment support, life skills training, medical resources and social services.

“Case managers for kids will address critical needs like education, healthcare, emotional well-being and social development,” Smith said. “By providing this specialized support, we can ensure children have the stability and tools they need to thrive during an incredibly challenging time.”
The shelter also offers on-site amenities like a food pantry, playgrounds, laundry facilities and common areas to further support families experiencing homelessness.
Resources like those offered at Vista Colina Shelter are crucial due to the rising need for shelter services focused on families in Maricopa County, according to CASS, which said there are over 200 families in local shelters.
