PHOENIX – Two Valley cities have rightful claims to the title of fastest-growing city in the country.

Buckeye leads the nation in population growth percentage, and Phoenix is No. 1 in numeric increase, the U.S. Census Bureau said Thursday.

The rankings were based on growth from July 1, 2017, to July 1, 2018, for cities with a population of at least 50,000.

Phoenix added 25,288 residents in that span, leading the nation for the third consecutive year. Two Texas cities, San Antonio (20,824) and Fort Worth (19,552), were next on the list.

Arizona’s largest city remains fifth overall in population with a population of 1,660,272, still trailing No. 4 Houston by more than 650,000.

Buckeye grew to 74,370 residents from 2017 to 2018, an increase of 8.5%. New Braunfels, Texas, (7.2%) and Apex, North Carolina, (6.8%) were the only other cities to grow by more than 6.1%.

“Buckeye provides our residents an excellent quality of life,” Mayor Jackie Meck said in a press release.

“We offer good housing values but are also staying focused on ensuring we remain a desirable community for years to come.”

The West Valley suburb, which was No. 5 on the previous year’s list, is poised to remain near the top for a while.

The city has a planning area of more than 640 square miles and is only 5% built out, the release said.

Last month, the Census Bureau reported that Maricopa County was the nation’s fastest-growing county for the third consecutive year.
