PHOENIX — Bird flu has been detected in Arizona for the second time in less than a month, with this outbreak happening in Maricopa County, health officials said Monday.

Poultry in a backyard flock tested positive for avian influenza on Thursday, according to the Arizona Department of Agriculture (AZDA).

The flock was put under quarantine and efforts to eliminate the virus and create a sanitized environment, AZDA added.

“ADHS is collaborating with AZDA and local health departments in the response to avian influenza and will continue to monitor influenza activity in Arizona in collaboration with local health
departments,” Nicole Witt, ADHS assistant director of preparedness, said in a press release.

More bird flu in Arizona

Ten days earlier, AZDA reported poultry on a Pinal County commercial farm tested positive for bird flu.

After that poultry became sick, eggs stopped being produced. No contaminated eggs were shipped out into the food supply, AZDA said.

Even with the recent outbreaks, health officials say the risk of contracting bird flu is low. Most who are at risk are those in daily contact with poultry.

“While the risk to the general public remains low, workers and individuals that may be at risk for exposure to avian influenza should follow public health guidance,” Witt said.

Anyone who suspects poultry to have bird flu should call the sick bird hotline at 1-866-536-7593.
