PHOENIX — Valley-based grocer Bashas’ celebrated its 90th anniversary this week in a sweet way by setting the Guinness World Record for largest doughnut mosaic.
The 902-square-foot mosaic, constructed with nearly 14,500 doughnuts and 48,000 ounces of icing, was achieved on Tuesday at Basha High School in Chandler.
“We wanted to do something really special to celebrate Bashas’ 90th anniversary,” Ashley Shick, director of community relations and public affairs for Bashas’, said in a press release. “What could be more special than breaking a Guinness World Records title?
“We’re honored to be a record holder and are thankful for our colleagues, customers and friends who came out to show their support for our efforts.”
The successful attempt overtook the previous record of 7,040 doughnuts laid out over 512 square feet that was set in January 2012.
The doughnut challenge is the shortest-lived of the events planned for the 90-dayslong anniversary.
There will be gift card giveaways from July 27-Oct. 4, a community choice charity challenge from July 18-Sept. 23 and random acts of kindness Sept. 17-18.
The family-owned chain was officially acquired by California-based Raley’s in December, but remains headquartered in the East Valley.
The sale guaranteed the continuation of Bashas’ store service across Arizona and New Mexico while allowing Bashas’ to be a fully formed operating company within Raley’s enterprise.
Bashas’ brands also include Food City and AJ’s Fine Foods.
