PHOENIX — The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development on Tuesday awarded $10.38 million to 12 Arizona public housing authorities to modernize homes for families and seniors, according to a press release.

The city of Phoenix housing department received $4 million, while Tucson’s housing and community development was awarded the second-most with $2.5 million.

Chandler and Flagstaff’s housing authorities followed behind with $725,962 and $722,268, respectively.

Housing authorities from Glendale, Eloy, Nogales, Pinal County, south Tucson, Williams, Winslow and Yuma received the remaining $2.3 million.

Funds can be used to build, renovate or modernize public housing; or complete large-scale improvements such as replacing roofs, making energy-efficient upgrades to heating systems or installing water conservation measures, according to the release.

The Arizona grants were part of more than $2.7 billion HUB awarded to nearly 2,900 public housing authorities in all 50 states, as well as the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to the release.
