Arizona is one of 18 states considered “extremely hostile” to abortion by the reproductive rights think tank, the Guttmacher Institute.
The number of states on the growing list has tripled in the past four years.
“It’s extremely unfortunate that our state laws are being used to make it harder for women to get health care rather than focusing on improving the quality of health care,” said Bryan Howard, president of Planned Parenthood Arizona.
Despite tougher restrictions, the average number of women who receive abortions in Arizona has not declined significantly over the past decade. Approximately 11,000 to 12,000 women get the procedure done every year.
“Women will do what they have to do to protect their health and well-being of themselves and their family, even in the face of the barriers being imposed on them,” said Howard.
