PHOENIX — The Arizona Humane Society announced Monday it has received a $50,000 grant to support its pet resource center.

The grant from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust assists the nonprofit organization to help pet owners who are struggling to care for their pets.

“In the wake of COVID-19, thousands of pet owners have sought support and resources from AHS to keep their families together and meet their basic needs,” Lindsay La Pre, Arizona Humane Society Pet Resource Center manager, said in a press release.

“This grant from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust will give us additional resources to provide aid to pet owners in crisis through our Real Time Solutions Fund, veterinary assistance program and Pet Housing Help AZ Task Force efforts.”

People can find out more information about the Arizona Humane Society Resource Center on the website.

The organization said more than 95,000 pet owners in Maricopa County each year seek assistance from the resource center.

There was a 10% increase in call volume to the resource center last fiscal year, the organization said, with a significant number of those callers living below the federal poverty level, facing unemployment or needing considerable support to meet their basic needs and keep their pets.

“Nina Mason Pulliam understood the power of the human-animal connection,” Lisa Shover Kackley, trustee of the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, said in the release. “Especially during difficult times, pets provide irreplaceable support to their human family members.

“We are pleased to aid the Arizona Humane Society in its efforts to keep pets and their families together.”
