PHOENIX – A Republican Arizona lawmaker appeared to agree with a former porn star’s suggestion that Democrats were responsible for the wave of mail bombs sent to Democratic targets this week.

Rep. Mark Finchem of Oro Valley, near Tucson, retweeted a Wednesday post by Jenna Jameson that said, “Now that the democrats are sending bombs to themselves … they’ve reached a whole different level of desperation.”

That was right after he retweeted a post by @WyattEarpLA, an unverified account, that implied the bombing story was “fake news” because pictures were taken of one of the bombs while it was “apparently still counting down.”

Finchem also retweeted a post by conservative commentator John Cardillo with similar sentiments suggesting that it was “logical to question who actually sent the bombs.”

More than a dozen suspicious packages had been sent recently to high-profile newsmakers. All the intended recipients were Democrats and open critics of President Donald Trump.

Finchem’s retweets came days before a suspect in the case, Cesar Sayoc, was arrested in Florida on Friday.

The suspect is a registered Republican with social media accounts containing memes supporting Trump, denigrating Democrats, and promoting conspiracy theories about George Soros, the billionaire political donor who was the first targeted this week by a package bomb.

Finchem’s campaign did not respond to requests for comment.

The southern Arizona Republican is seeking his third term in the state House. The other candidates for the two seats from his district are Republican Bret Roberts and Democrats Hollace Lyon and Marcela Quiroz.
