PHOENIX — A Republican U.S. congressman from Arizona says he thinks former Vice President Joe Biden will pose the biggest threat to Donald Trump if they face off in next year’s presidential race.
“I think (Biden) poses the biggest threat because he is the most centrist,” U.S. Rep. Andy Biggs told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Arizona’s Morning News on Thursday.
“He could bring in maybe some of those people who voted for Trump in the heartland.”
Biden announced early Thursday that he would join the crowded Democratic primary in a bid to oust Trump from the White House.
The 76-year-old launched his campaign with a video on social media that argued the “soul of this nation” was at stake if Trump won re-election.
But Biggs argued that Biden’s chances of securing the Democratic Party nomination could be hurt — by the party’s narrative.
“The reality is the leftists and the Democrat Party have already basically trashed him, saying he is already too centrist,” Biggs said.
“But right now, he’s the only centrist out of the 20 (candidates).”
A February poll found that Arizona voters would be split down the middle if Trump were to face Biden in the general election.
OH Predictive Insights’ survey showed each man had 46 percent of the votes in a potential presidential match-up.
