APS extends halt on past-due disconnects through end of year

PHOENIX – The biggest electric utility in Arizona announced Tuesday it would extend a promise to not disconnect customer power for nonpayment through the end of the year.

Arizona Public Service cited pandemic-related difficulties, such as job loss and schooling at home, in making the move.

The company suspended disconnections for nonpayment and waived late fees in March. A seasonal hold on shutoffs to businesses and homes was scheduled to end Oct. 15.

“Across Arizona, we have faced the challenges of this pandemic and record summer temperatures together, and we are here to help and work with our customers,” Monica Whiting, vice president of customer experience, said in a press release.

The Valley’s other major electricity supplier, Salt River Project, has paused shutoffs and late fees over nonpayments through Oct. 1.

APS said customers who were struggling to pay their power bills can check the company’s assistance programs before the end of the year. Flexible pay options are available.

The utility said in the press release, “paying even a small amount will help the balance owed from continuing to grow.”

Customers could qualify for support in 2021 that includes a one-time bill credit of $100 for a home or $1,000 for a small business and an on-going 25% discount.
