PHOENIX — Six locations in Tempe have been designated as a Certified Autism Center, with each offering various services and support for visitors with autism or sensory needs.

The participating locations are the Tempe Public Library, Kiwanis Park, Kiwanis Recreation Center, Tempe History Museum, Edna Vihel Arts Center and Tempe Town Lake.

Among the services offered at some of the locations include stimulating artwork, inclusive play equipment as well as places to calm and soothe, according to a press release.

“This autism certification is an important first step towards becoming a city that is fully inclusive and welcoming to individuals of all abilities,” Mayor Corey Woods said in the release.

“We are very proud of the work we’ve done, and we look forward to the day when every city facility is certified and fully equipped to serve all.”

The designation is granted by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards.

As part of the designation process, which must be renewed every two years, at least 80% of the public-facing department staff must complete a training and certification program to better understand the autism spectrum.

The organization also performs an onsite review of key facilities to provide additional support, recommendations and tools to enhance inclusion and accessibility.

Other programs hosted in Tempe include the Special Olympics, LEAP After-School Program, Buddy Bowling and Camp Challenge.
