PHOENIX – How fast are people flocking to the Valley?

The Greater Phoenix population has been rising by 200 residents a day as a result of people relocating, according to a recent Bloomberg report.

The news organization looked at net migration – the number of residents who move in minus those who move out – in the 100 largest U.S. metro areas, based on U.S. Census Bureau data from July 1, 2017, to July 1, 2018.

The figures don’t include population changes due to deaths and births.

Phoenix ranked No. 2 on the list, behind only Dallas, which had a daily migration growth of 212.

Phoenix was No. 1 in several areas, however.

The Valley added 174 residents a day through migration in 2016-17. The daily net increase of 26 the next year was easily tops in the U.S. Orlando (12) and Denver (11) were the only other areas with a double-digit daily growth year over year.

Metro Phoenix also added a nation-high 62,000 people through migration involving people already living in the U.S. in 2017-18, far outpacing No. 2 Dallas’s 46,000.

The numbers should come as no surprise, as Maricopa County has been the fastest-growing county in the U.S. for three years running.

On the other end of the list, New York’s population dipped by 277 a day due to migration, with Los Angeles next with an exodus of 201 residents per day.

New York’s steep drop was more than double its daily decline of 132 the previous year.
