PHOENIX — A private motor club and racetrack for car lovers in Arizona was only a few months from roaring into action, officials said this week.

The first track at the $40 million Apex Motor Club south of Phoenix was expected to be ready in February. The next phase will complete the over 4-mile layout in Maricopa.

There were 100 spots on the membership roster for the initial 2.27-mile track at a cost of $30,000 to $75,000 each.

“It will be an amazing, safe location to gather with enthusiasts,” co-founder Craig Jackson, who also owns and operates Barrett-Jackson Auction Company, said in an emailed statement.

He described the Phoenix area as a “mecca for car enthusiasts.”

The project hasn’t been without complications. A woman sued the city in 2017 saying the developers improperly got permits for the park, PinalCentral.com reported.

An appeals court rejected Bonita Burks’ argument. A Pinal County judge had sided with the city. The Arizona Supreme Court was reviewing a petition for review of the lawsuit.

Plans called for the first track to have a long straightaway and tight turns. The second track was to feature a more open layout.

The 280-acre site will include a clubhouse and 168 garage condos.

“It is a huge win for not only the city of Maricopa but also for Arizona and the entire Southwest region,” Maricopa Mayor Christian Price said in the statement.

The track will be close to State Route 238. Ground was broken Nov. 8.

Nearby Casa Grande has plans for a large motor sports complex. In June 2016, Danrick Builders announced plans to create a 2,360-acre recreational park there called Attesa.

In July, a blog post at Attesa’s website said, “we have no doubt there’s going to be a happy ending.”

We want to hear from you.
