Group of Sun Devils stands in solidarity with DREAMers

PHOENIX — Nearly 100 Arizona State University students marched around the ASU Tempe campus Tuesday pushing for tuition equality for Arizona DREAMers.

These Sun Devil students said they are standing in solidarity with DACA recipients who have lived the majority of their lives in Arizona but are banned from receiving in-state tuition at any of the state’s public universities.

“We pay taxes, we are good people, we are students,” Arizona DREAMer Bellen Sisa said. “We need to do the right thing here.”

Sisa currently attends Chandler-Gilbert Community College where she receives in-state tuition. The DACA recipient said she has lived in Arizona since she was six years old and hopes to attend ASU to study political science; however she said she cannot afford in-state tuition.

“I feel like I have done everything right,” she said. “I have worked so hard, I have so many goals and aspirations so it makes me feel frustrated and very sad that I can’t finish my degree.”

She said she and many other Arizona DREAMers feel cheated because the Arizona Board of Regents will not give them the same opportunities as students with permanent legal status.
