Big crowds expected at weekend outdoor expo

PHOENIX — Arizona Game and Fish Department is hoping the nice weather will help lure families to its Outdoor Expo this weekend. Last year 38,000 attended.

The Outdoor Expo runs Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m-4 p.m. at Ben Avery Shooting Range just west of Interstate 17 on Carefree Highway.

Kellie Tharp with Arizona Game and Fish said this is a great chance to introduce children to the great outdoors.

“We have camping and kids’ catch and release tanks for fishing. It is going to be hot but there are tents and shade structures to where you can get out of the heat.”

The event includes exhibits, live animals, among them hawks and reptiles and hands-on demonstrations. Youngsters will also have a chance to learn about archery and shoot firearms.

A boat show is also part of the big event. Rory Aikens of Game and Fish said Rock Crawlers off-roaders will be rolling around and that’s always fun for kids to see.

“Their wheels extend out and (the kids) can climb over the giant boulders out here,” Aikens said.
