Phoenix firefighter killed in car crash

PHOENIX — The Phoenix Fire Department is mourning the death of one of their own.
Firefighter Matt Hiatt was killed in a crash on the Loop 202 near Dobson Road Friday. According to the Department of Public Safety, Hiatt crashed into a concrete foundation on the right shoulder. His truck burst into flames, and he was unable to escape. Hiatt was the only person in the vehicle.
Hiatt, 43, is from Gilbert and is the son of retired engineer Max Hiatt. The family is making funeral arrangements and will announce plans as soon as they are available.
