Rare George Washington painting to be auctioned off in Scottsdale

PHOENIX — A rare painting of President George Washington by one of America’s most famous portrait painters will soon be available to the public for purchase.
The painting, composed by portrait artist Gilbert Stuart, will be auctioned off at J. Levine Auction and Appraisal, 10345 N. Scottsdale Road, on Thursday, Feb. 26, at 11 a.m, CBS 5 reports.
There will be a free public preview of the portrait next Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The portrait of the president is expected to sell for about $1 million. Prior to the auction, the oil painting hung in the Phoenix Art Museum for over 20 years.
Stuart, an 18th-century painter, composed upwards of 1,000 portraits, including the first six presidents. His work is featured in museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the National Portrait Gallery in London.
Stuart painted all the way until his death in 1828 at the age of 72.
