He may be on the other side of the aisle, but Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders does not think the American people would elect Republican front-runner Donald Trump as president.
“I do not believe Donald Trump will become president of the United States,” Sanders told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Mac & Gaydos on Monday.
“It would be a disaster for this country and an international embarrassment.”
Sanders said Trump’s rhetoric has been far too divisive for him to gain popular support.
“You cannot have a president who insults Mexicans, who insults Muslims, who insults women, who insults veterans – people like John McCain – who insults the African-American community … that is not the kind of person that the American people are going to elect,” Sanders said.
The Vermont senator was also critical of Trump’s honesty, or lack thereof.
“He really does not tell the truth very often,” Sanders said. “You and I can disagree, but you can’t disagree if somebody is not telling the truth. You’ve got to have a foundation of reality.”
Sanders hit Trump on the Republican’s oft-touted idea to build a wall along the border with Mexico, saying it isolates a key trade partner and ally.
“I don’t think you need a wall that goes from one end of the country to the other,” he said.
Trump has not provided specifics about the wall but says it would cost between $10 billion and $12 billion. He has said he would make Mexico pay for it. Mexico has scoffed at the idea.
