High-speed chase on Interstate 17 ends in Phoenix street crash, 2 hurt

PHOENIX — Two people were seriously injured Monday in a collision that followed a high-speed car chase on a Phoenix freeway.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said one person was in the hospital with life-threatening injuries and the other with serious injuries from the accident near Interstate 17 and Thomas Road.

The car that was being chased, which had reached speeds of 115 mph during a four-mile sprint across the freeway, ran a red light on Thomas, then slammed into another vehicle.

The driver was ejected from the vehicle and suffered life-threatening injuries.

A DPS spokesman said its officer tried to pull over the vehicle for reckless driving on
southbound Interstate 17 but ended the chase after the
vehicle reached speeds over 115 mph.

That vehicle’s driver suffered serious
injuries, a highway authority said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
