PHOENIX — Some members of the African-American community say they are still concerned over the weak relationship that exists between them and Phoenix police.

The situation came to a head following national protests and a local officer-involved shooting where an alleged black drug dealer was shot and killed by a white Phoenix police officer. There were a series of protests, including one in front of Phoenix police headquarters.

“Some members of the African-American community feel that way. Some have had really bad experiences,” said Ben Taylor, an activist and local attorney. “Community leaders are very concerned, but it’s time to move forward. Hopefully, the new acting (police) chief will address concerns.”

Interim police chief Joseph Yahner seems eager to begin mending relations. He is hosting a citywide Coffee with a Cop event on Wed, Jan. 7, at 8 a.m. at Steele Indian School Park in Phoenix.
