Spring breakers traveling through Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport’s Terminal 3 this month might notice some construction going on around the building.

It’s part of the ongoing terminal modernization project that will take place in three phases.

Phase 1, which is expected to be completed this fall, will include a consolidated larger security checkpoint as well as new airline ticket counters. Phase 2 will include a new south concourse, with phase 3 consisting of an expanded north concourse.

“The reason why the project is done in phases is to minimize disruption to our travelers,” said Heather Lissner, acting public information manager for Sky Harbor airport.

When the full project is completed in 2020, there will be 25 gates. That includes 10 gates for the North Concourse and 15 gates for the South Concourse. The project is estimated to cost about $590 million.

Lissner said it is funded through money from airport services like parking or buying food. She said the goal of the project is to provide travelers with even better customer service.

“We’ll be able to give them a more efficient and enjoyable and modern, convenient travel experience,” Lissner said.

Right now, four airlines are housed in Terminal 3, Delta, Frontier, Hawaiian and JetBlue. When the project is finished, Lissner said Terminal 2 will close and airlines like United and Alaska will move into Terminal 3.
