Survey ranks some Arizona cities ‘least educated in America’

Dec 11, 2014, 7:00 AM | Updated: 7:00 am

A new survey says that the least educated city in America is right here in Arizona.

The poll by 247Wallstreet.com says only 11.3 percent of people in the Lake Havasu City-Kingman area have a Bachelor’s degree or higher.

Tom Rex of the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University says there are a couple of reasons why the area finished No.1.

“One is that there’s a lot of retirees in Mohave county, and retirees across the national have less educational attainment on average than younger people,” Rex said.

The survey lumped Lake Havasu, Kingman and Bullhead City as a “metro” area, even though they are actually several miles apart.

“They don’t have the same type of nearby density as a typical metro area, so there almost more like small cities or rural area, which, across the nation, do have lesser educational attainment,” said Rex.

He doesn’t expect things to change anytime soon, even though ASU has recently opened a campus in Lake Havasu City.

The survey rated Dalton, Georgia, second on the list. El Centro, Calif. is third.
