According to a statement released Thursday evening, Tempe Police announced that the annual Run from the Cops 5K is postponed in light of recent relations between the police force and the American public.
Much consideration went into postponing the yearly fundraiser for the Tempe Police Foundation, according to Tempe police chief Tom Ryff’s statement.
“As Chief of Police, it is incumbent upon me — as it is for every Tempe Police employee — to remain ever-mindful of the needs of our community. Just as important, we must remain attuned to the national conversations taking place concerning the relationships between law enforcement and the American public,” he said.
He also said that the decision was made out of “sensitivity, respect and support for all sides of an important debate taking place all across our great country.”
Ryff said he then received a letter of thanks from the NAACP’s Maricopa branch president, Rev. Oscar Tillman, for the decision to postpone.
