PHOENIX — Black Friday has come and gone, but with the jump in Arizona gun sales, it might as well have been called Black Powder Friday.
For one Valley gun store owner, Black Friday sales this year were enormous.
“It’s the number one day of the year,” said Danny Todd, owner of AZ Firearms near Dysart Road and Western Avenue in Avondale, Ariz. Todd said his shop sold about 50 or 60 guns on the biggest shopping day of the year.
“It’s probably five or six times better than a normal day,” he said.
AZ Firearms offered a 10 percent discount on Friday, but the hottest item in the store was actually gift cards.
“You can’t buy a gun for somebody else,” Todd said. “We recommend that they give a gift card then they let the person come in to do the paperwork.”
He said over the past few years sales have continued to increase on Black Friday. Those sales help carry his business into the new year.
Newsweek reported nationwide gun sales on Black Friday nearly overwhelmed the FBI with more than 175,000 requests for background checks. It was the busiest day after Thanksgiving for gun sales in history.
