Sen. Ted Cruz came away with a win in his home state of Texas and also won Oklahoma during Super Tuesday.
Cruz has been second, third or fourth in all of the other state races.
Initially, Cruz had hoped for the highest number of delegates from his home state of Texas and possibly a good amount from neighboring Oklahoma and Arkansas — and a few second-place finishes — to keep his campaign alive.
He has mostly accomplished that goal so far, although Trump is leading in Arkansas.
Prior to Tuesday, Cruz had expected a strong showing in the South. The Texas senator, a favorite of the region’s social conservatives and evangelical Christians, expected the South to be his firewall.
The Texas senator will face off his Republican counterparts at another debate on Thursday.
Cruz will get his next shot to secure his spot as the Republican presidential nominee on Saturday, when the candidates take on caucuses in Kansas, Louisiana, Kentucky and Maine.
