PHOENIX — Hollywood loves an underdog and found a beauty in a Phoenix high school robotics team.
The film “Spare Parts” is about an underfunded Carl T. Hayden Community High School team that beat out prestigious school — including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology — to win a 2004 underwater robotics competition.
The team’s story was first told in a documentary earlier this year called “Underwater Dreams.”
Prior to the documentary’s release, the students were invited to the White House by President Barack Obama to attend a speech on science, technology, electronics and math education.
“Spare Parts” is scheduled for a Jan. 16, 2015 release. It stars Marisa Tomei, Jamie Lee Curtis and George Lopez, among others.
