Tuesday is National Taco Day. And National Taco Day should be celebrated.
And you can’t go just anywhere for the big day. Would you shop just anywhere for Christmas gifts? Would you take your mother just anywhere for Mother’s Day brunch? Far be it from you to eat a bad taco on National Taco Day.
Do the day right and check out one of these eight spots in the taco-saturated Valley:
America’s Taco Shop
Based on names of taco spots in the Valley alone, America’s Taco Shop seems like the most obvious choice for an NTD outing. But the menu matches the occasion too. America’s has a simple, straightforward selection of three tacos — Carne Asada, Al Pastor and Chicken.
America’s Taco Shop has five locations in the Valley.
Blanco Tacos + Tequila
A Fox restaurant concept, Blanco has three locations in the Valley, including one in Sky Harbor International Airport. The joint has a robust taco menu, with unique selections like the award-winning bar-b-q pork taco, the chipotle shrimp and roasted mushroom, along with about 10 others.
Most Wanted Taco Shop
A funky spot in north central Phoenix, Most Wanted Taco Shop is a Yelp hit. It boasts a strong, cheap selection of tacos and a diverse salsa bar to boot. Get your protein with a nice variety of Mexican-style meats, from barbacoa to carnitas, pastor and adobada.
With a sister restaurant in downtown Scottsdale, Barrio Cafe has been a classic Phoenix foodie hub for over a decade. Prices are certainly higher here than at other taco joints, but Barrio’s menu was designed by an innovative, French-trained chef who features entrees such as the Cochinita Pibil taco — described as “pork, marinated in achiote and sour orange, wrapped in a banana leaf and slow roasted overnight, topped with pickled red onion and Yucatan-style pico de gallo.” Barrio features five craft tacos.
A newer spot in midtown Phoenix, Taco Guild launched in a renovated church and has sought to reform tacos since. Look for extremely unique, innovative tacos here, such as the Peking duck, coffee braised beef, the Molida lamb or the Thai snapper (and more).
Loco Patron’s award-winning tacos are similarly innovative, with Hawaiian tacos, lobster tacos, coconut shrimp tacos and about 10 others. This Scottsdale staple also has a spot in Tempe and has rave-worthy margaritas to quench.
Los Reyes de la Torta
Enough with the new school, Los Reyes de la Torta is an authentic Mexican restaurant with three Valley locations and a killer taco rotation. Find classic offerings, like the lengua (beef tongue), the cabeza (beef head) or the buche (pork belly). Choose from a dozen tacos at this popular spot.
La Santisima Gourmet Taco Shop
With two Phoenix locations, this place lives up to its name and may be the Valley destination for innovative tacos. From shark to pork shoulder to Sonoran-style carne asada, La Santisima seems to be celebrating NTD year-round.
