PHOENIX — Arizona State University produced the most Fulbright scholars in the nation for the 2015-16 academic year, the school said.

ASU said it produced 10 scholars this year, two more than any other school in the nation.

“The tremendous number of Fulbrights awarded to our students and scholars spotlights the success of ASU’s top quality faculty nurturing high caliber students, regardless of their backgrounds before they arrived at ASU,” Mark Searle, executive vice president and university provost, told ASU News.

The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program is a grant that sends American faculty members or professionals oversees to lecture or conduct research up to one year.

“Their research and service around the world further expands the university’s global engagement,” Searle said.

In addition to the 10 scholars, ASU also produced 22 Fulbright students. Those 22 students received a grant similar to that received by the scholars and are studying abroad.

“What these numbers don’t show is how hard each of these applicants worked,” Kyle Mox, student Fulbright coordinator and associate dean of Barrett, the Honors College, told ASU News. “It isn’t uncommon to write five to 10 drafts of the application essays. These results are a testament to the work ethic of our students and faculty.”

The Chronicle of Higher Education said the University of Arizona produced six Fulbright scholars.
