Phoenix flights disrupted by fire at Chicago air-traffic center

PHOENIX — Nearly two dozen flights at Sky Harbor were canceled Friday morning after a fire shut down an air-traffic control facility near Chicago.

Sky Harbor said about 20 flights between the two cities were affected. Across the nation, more than 1,000 flights had to be diverted or canceled.

Employees were evacuated from the Aurora, Ill., center when a fire erupted in a basement during predawn hours. Later, a man with self-inflicted wounds was found in the room.

A Sky Harbor spokeswoman said Phoenix-Milwaukee flights also were affected.
