LISTEN: John McCain, U.S. Senator from Arizona

PHOENIX — In recent years, Arizona has made national headlines for some not-so-great news.

Senate Bill 1070 and Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the self-titled “Toughest Sheriff in America,” may have marred the Grand Canyon State’s reputation for a time, but Arizona Sen. John McCain told Arizona Sports’ Bickley and Marotta on Thursday that its “image has dramatically improved.”

“People’s attention spans and memories are rather short,” he said.

As part of Newsmakers Week on Arizona Sports 98.7, McCain spoke about the Valley’s growing desirability, not only as a place to live, but a place to gather for sporting events.

“I’m kinda proud that whenever a national championship is discussed, the Valley is in the mix,” he said.

McCain went on to cite the 2016 College Football National Championship and Super Bowl 49 as major successes for the valley.

“People want to be part of downtown Tempe and Scottsdale, and now downtown Phoenix; the growth is incredibly marvelous,” he said.

Though the weather during Super Bowl 49 was uncharacteristically nasty, the Valley’s restaurants, nightlife and hotels received positive reviews from national news outlets.

“The dark days, I think, are over,” he said.

We want to hear from you.
