FLORENCE, Ariz. — A former Arizona Department of Corrections employee has
surrendered to Florence police after his mother was found fatally shot in the
home they share.
Police say 41-year-old Alexander A. Santiago was taken into custody Thursday.
He had been a corrections officer since May 2011 at the state prison in
Florence. DOC officials say Santiago resigned Thursday night.
Police saw a suspicious person walking in the department’s parking lot about 10
The man later identified as Santiago said he needed to be arrested because he
had shot somebody.
Officers went to a Florence house and found 61-year-old Sean M. Lafitte dead in
the kitchen. Police say she had a single gunshot wound to the head.
They say Santiago told them he shot his mother because he has anger issues.
