Nice note: Arizona choir brings home 2016 Grammy award

Feb 17, 2016, 11:16 AM

PHOENIX — You didn’t see it on live television, but an Arizona choir won a 2016 Grammy award on Monday.

Phoenix Chorale artistic director Charles Bruffy took the stage to accept the award for Best Chorale Performance for the album “Rachmaninoff: All Night Vigil.”

The Phoenix New Times reports the album debuted in the top spot on Billboard’s Traditional Classic chart. It stayed on the chart for five weeks.

The New Times said the album is a nod to famed Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff and was put together in honor of the 100th anniversary of a Moscow choir’s performance of the same music. It was highly regarded in the classical music world.

The album was recorded in Missouri and featured members of both the Phoenix and Kansas City chorales. Bruffy is also the artistic director of the Kansas City Chorale.

Another Arizona resident, Eric Holtran, was also up for the same Grammy. He walked the red carpet at the event with Bruffy. About 40 singers between both of Bruffy’s choirs also attended the event.

Monday was not the first Grammy for Bruffy, as he has won three of the awards and been nominated 12 times.

We want to hear from you.
