Crime rates rise when ASU is in session

PHOENIX — Though “difficult to quantify,” Tempe police officers note a historical rise in crime rates when students return to Arizona State University.

“You add 50,000 people to our city, we are going to have a higher crime rate,” said Commander Noah Johnson. “But anytime you involve the community, there becomes a synergy, and it’s easier to reduce crime.”

For the first time, Tempe Police, the ASU Police Department and school officials have joined forces to reach out to residents living in single-family homes around the main campus. Residents will be provided information and resources on crime prevention. The ultimate goal is to build a stronger sense of community and to ensure the safety of everyone who resides in the city.

The “Welcome Back Walks” will continue through Wednesday.
