Gun owners must properly secure their weapons at all times to prevent tragedies

You know, I’m lucky enough to have the opportunity to end each day with a final thought both on air and for KTAR.com.
Today, I was all fired up to have some fun at the expense of people buying their pets gifts for Valentine’s Day. But as my father always said, life happens when you are making other plans.
Today’s life event? Two 15-year-old girls were found shot dead at Independence High School in Glendale, Arizona.
I knew that our team here at KTAR News would be all over this and we would have the details as they were released, but in the meantime, we are left to speculate and ask why this tragic event occurred.
We may never know the motive behind this tragedy, which Glendale Police are calling a murder-suicide, but what we do know is that one of these girls had access to a firearm.
In this case, we still don’t know how the firearm was obtained.
But we must continue to educate and remind each other, as gun owners, that secure firearm storage can NEVER be taken lightly.
I don’t want to hear any more of this, “My kid has been around guns their whole life, they are safe.”
No more of this, “Well, they are all in a safe, so nothing can happen” nonsense!
Gun ownership is a right and it is also a responsibility. It is time to completely secure each firearm in our possession.
Please do NOT take this matter lightly.
Would any of this have stopped today’s tragedy? Maybe, maybe not.
But we as gun-owning adults can at least lower the odds of tragedies like this from happening if we just take our firearm security to another level.
I know that I will be upping my firearm security this weekend. Please join me.
