PHOENIX — A speeding car smashed into the back of a pickup truck early Friday in Phoenix, sending the truck into a utility pole and killing the driver.
The 1:45 a.m. accident shut down Grand Avenue between 35th and 43rd avenues in both directions. By 3 p.m. both directions of Grand Avenue were open to traffic, but the right two lanes of westbound traffic continued to be blocked.

Police said a white sedan rear-ended the pickup. The truck hit the pole with enough force to take out electricity service to the area.
Sgt. Vince Lewis said the driver of the pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene. Lewis said speed was a factor in the crash and investigators are checking whether there was driver impairment.
The driver of the sedan remained available for questioning.
