PHOENIX — A popular East Valley freeway will soon see plenty of delays and possible closures.
The Arizona Department of Transportation began a $73 million project Monday to widen the Loop 101 to five lanes between Shea Boulevard and the Loop 202 interchange.
“When we’re completed with the project — which is expected to be the end of 2016 — drivers will be able to enjoy the wider freeway,” said Dustin Krugel with ADOT.
Though the widening will take more than two years and cause traffic now, Krugel said the project will improve the highway for the long-term.
“It will definitely be well worth the wait,” he said. “This is an area that traffic volumes continue to increases and we need to expand the roadway.”
