GLENDALE, Ariz. — Authorities say an armed man whose suicidal threats led
to the closure of a freeway in Glendale has been hospitalized.
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday that 86-year-old Frank Schultz
was being evaluated at West Valley Hospital.
Sheriff’s spokesman Christopher Hegstrom said Schultz first threatened suicide
at his Sun City home Saturday afternoon and then fled with a handgun.
Authorities stopped his vehicle in the south lanes of Loop 303 near Bethany
The freeway was closed in both directions for several hours while deputies
tried to negotiate with Schultz to exit his vehicle.
Hegstrom said he was then Tased and taken into custody.
There were no other injuries.
Hegstrom said a handgun was recovered from Schultz’s vehicle.
Loop 303 reopened shortly before 8 p.m.
