Jevert Worthy, 21, is being held on suspicion of
aggravated assault and violating Shannon’s Law.
That law makes it a crime to fire a weapon into the air within city limits. It
came after the June 1999 death of 14-year-old Phoenix resident Shannon Smith,
who was hit by a stray bullet fired a mile away.
Police said Worthy got into a fight with a 20-year-old man and another person
near an entrance to a grocery store at 18th and Glendale avenues Sunday evening.
Worthy was accused of firing multiple shots; the victim suffered a nonlife-threatening gunshot wound.
Witnesses gave police the license plate number of the alleged shooter’s car, which led to Worthy’s arrest.
