Hydration is key during scorching Valley heat waves

PHOENIX — Whether young or old, those who suffer from chronic illness must stay hydrated, according to a Valley doctor.

“They (patients) take their regular medication, and because they don’t hydrate well enough, it can have an adverse effect,” said Maricopa Medical Center Emergency Physician Dr. Carl Mitchell. “They’re forced to come see us because they either collapse, pass out or have other issues.”

The elderly and younger populations are most vulnerable to excessive heat; however, anyone who is exposing themselves to the elements must not only drink water, but fluids that contain electrolytes.
