Man arrested in fatal Phoenix hit-and-run

PHOENIX — Phoenix police have arrested a man accused of fatally hitting a
pedestrian and then fleeing the scene.

Police spokesman Steve Martos said 66-year-old Vernon Traylor has been booked
into a Maricopa County jail on charges of DUI and leaving the scene of a fatal
traffic collision.

Martos said Traylor was heading southbound on a Phoenix street around 9 p.m.
Friday when his Ford Mustang struck 53-year-old Ruben Jimenez Solis.

Authorities said Solis died a short time later at a hospital.

Traylor is accused of initially stopping but then speeding away in his vehicle
after authorities arrived.

“He initially remained on scene, but when officers arrived, he decided to try to flee the scene,” Martos said. “Witnesses advised officers he was trying to leave. Those officers were able to stop him before he got away.”

Police said Traylor was found to be impaired by alcohol.
