Libertarian Barry Hess to be on ballot in Arizona governor’s race

PHOENIX — Libertarian Party candidate Barry Hess will be on the ballot in
the Arizona governor’s race.

A Republican challenge to Hess’ nominating petitions was dismissed Thursday.

Hess said a lawsuit filed by a Republican operative alleged that 36 of his
signatures were invalid.

That would have left Hess five short of the 133 signatures he needed to qualify
for the ballot.

Hess said Maricopa County election officials found that 20 of the disputed
signatures were good, giving him enough to get on the ballot.

Hess said, “It’s just another Republican attempt to try to win by exclusion.”

The Libertarian faces a crowded Republican race and a Democratic field currently being led by former Arizona Board of Regents Chairman Fred DuVal.
