Man shot by homeowner pleads not guilty in Phoenix break-in, assault

PHOENIX — A man who allegedly broke into a Phoenix home and assaulted a
woman before being shot pleaded not guilty in the case.

Michael Lewis appeared at his court arraignment Thursday in a wheelchair and
plastic body brace.

He was in a hospital for nearly a month as he recovered from a gunshot wound.

Phoenix police said the 20-year-old was arrested on suspicion of
aggravated assault and residential burglary.

Lewis was shot after the 47-year-old homeowner said he broke into her home with
a gardening tool on May 6.

The homeowner said she saw Lewis looking through the window, armed herself with
a handgun and hid in the bathroom.

Court records showed the woman told police that Lewis followed her into the
bathroom and punched her in the face.
