$30K gold nugget stolen from Tucson planetarium

TUCSON, Ariz. — University of Arizona police said a gold nugget valued at
$30,000 has been stolen from the school’s planetarium.

The theft was discovered about 2:30 p.m. Friday when someone noticed
the well-known nugget was missing from the Hubert de Monmonier Collection.

The collection is showcased in the Flandrau Planetarium at the university.

The nugget weighs 7 ounces and is part of the golden section of the collection,
which makes up 8 percent of the exhibit’s total minerals.

Campus police said the exhibit was used for teaching purposes and the public had
access to the nugget.

Police don’t have any suspects.
