TUCSON, Ariz. — University of Arizona police said a gold nugget valued at
$30,000 has been stolen from the school’s planetarium.
The theft was discovered about 2:30 p.m. Friday when someone noticed
the well-known nugget was missing from the Hubert de Monmonier Collection.
The collection is showcased in the Flandrau Planetarium at the university.
The nugget weighs 7 ounces and is part of the golden section of the collection,
which makes up 8 percent of the exhibit’s total minerals.
Campus police said the exhibit was used for teaching purposes and the public had
access to the nugget.
Police don’t have any suspects.
